Puthandu is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai. This year, Puthandu will be seen on 14 April. According to the Drink Panchang, the Sankranti moment of Puthandu will be seen at 3:30 pm.

It is believed that on the auspicious day of Puthandu, Lord Brahma began the creation of the universe. Devotees also believe that Lord Indra reached Earth on this day to bring peace, hope and happiness. Puthandu is believed to be one of the most auspicious days to start something new, such as a new enterprise or a new business. People spend days with devotion, dedication, hope and solidarity to get happiness for the whole year.

Puthandu 2025: Rituals and Festival

Puthandu has a set of rich traditions and rituals followed by the people of Tamil Nadu. In the morning, people decorate their homes with Kolam and welcome guests. They also meet their loved ones with flowers, sweets and fruits. A special rice dish called Pongal is prepared on this day and it is introduced to the gods and goddesses. Molasses, sour raw mango, tamarind, neem leaves, and a mano of red chili, known as Mango Pachadi, are prepared at home and remembered with family and friends.
