Beirut:
At least two people were killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Monday, Lebanese officials said, as a ceasefire that ended more than a year of hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah appeared to be rapidly weakening.
The ceasefire, which took effect on 27 November, stipulates that Israel will not conduct offensive military operations against civilian, military or other state targets in Lebanon, while Lebanon will prevent any armed group, including Hezbollah, from conducting operations. Israel.
Lebanon and Israel have already accused Israel of violations, and on Monday Lebanon said the violations had turned deadly.
Lebanon’s health ministry said one person was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Marjayoun, about 10 km (six miles) from the border with Israel.
Lebanon’s state security said an Israeli drone strike killed a member of its force while he was on duty in Nabatieh, 12 km from the border. State security described it as a “gross violation” of the ceasefire.
There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.
Public broadcaster Kan and other Israeli media outlets said Monday that US envoy Amos Hochstein, who brokered the ceasefire after several weeks of shuttle diplomacy, had warned Israel against alleged violations.
The Israeli government did not immediately comment on the reports.
