In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. In Meenakshi Kamath, MBBS, DGO, Senior Advisor obstetric and gynecology, Apollo Specialty Hospitals Private Limited in Bengaluru, suggested sharing nutrition tips to keep an eye on some signs of dehydration.

He said, “The expected mothers see many physical changes including regular body pain, weight gain, hormonal changes and more during pregnancy. Hot weather and poor nutrition make them more difficult to manage physical demands. The risks related to fluid damage can be increased and energy losses can be increased.

Dr. Kamath shared these early signs of dehydration among the expected mothers:

● Cramps or muscle cramps

Dr. Kamath shared these nutrition tips:

  • Eating small and frequent food can help maintain energy levels and prevent overheating.
  • Cucumbers, watermelons, and oranges are hydrating and rich in water content. They are filled with vitamins and support bone health, immunity and digestion.
  • Coconut water is also very good because it helps maintain electrolyte balance and prevent muscle cramps.
  • Spinach is a nutrient-dense leafy green, rich in folate and iron, which is important for fetal development and prevention of anemia.
  • Instead of sugar soda/juice, stay hydrated with water, herbal tea, or coconut water to avoid unnecessary sugar intake and energy accidents.
  • While it is important to maintain electrolyte balance, take care of excessive salt. Excessive sodium can cause inflammation or increase inflammation.
  • Covering healthy fat from sources such as avocados, nuts and seeds can support the child’s brain development and provide energy to pregnant women during summer.
